U18 Capture Leeds Chargers Tournament Championship
On Saturday, January 3rd, the Eganville Eagles U18 team travelled to Athens, Ontario to compete in the Leeds Chargers Tournament, finishing first in round-robin play and going on to claim the tournament championship.
The Eagles opened the tournament against the Metcalf Jets. Eganville struck early in the first period with a goal from Sonny Sachs, but a slow start allowed Metcalf to respond just a minute later to tie the game. The Eagles regained the lead twice on goals from Gavin McFarlane, assisted by Levi Timm, and Quin Zomers, assisted by Alex Purdie. Each time, however, Metcalf answered back, and the evenly matched contest ended in a 3–3 tie.
In their second round-robin game, the Eagles faced the Russell Warriors and delivered a much stronger performance. Eganville controlled the play throughout, cruising to a 4–0 victory. Goals were scored by Ryder Two-Axe (assisted by Zach Yantha), Levi Timm (assisted by McFarlane), Landon Lapenskie (assisted by Sachs), and Hudson Kumm (assisted by McFarlane and Everton Good). Goaltender Erik Seguin was sharp in net, recording the shutout.
With the round-robin complete, the Eagles finished in first place, holding the tiebreaker over the Metcalf Jets and setting up a championship rematch.
The final began with both teams playing with intensity, each looking for redemption after the earlier tie. Metcalf opened the scoring less than two minutes into the game on a power play following a tripping penalty to McFarlane.
The start of the second period featured a wild sequence of events, as the Eagles thought they had tied the game only to see the goal waved off when the official lost sight of the puck. Moments later, Metcalf appeared to double their lead, but that goal was also disallowed when the net was ruled to have been dislodged.
At 7:27 of the second period, the Eagles finally broke through with a power-play goal of their own. Alex Purdie scored his first of the tournament, with assists from Kumm and Good, who won a puck battle in the corner and centred the puck to Purdie in front. Eganville continued to press, with Kumm scoring on a tight rebound at 6:40 and Sachs slipping a five-hole goal past the Metcalf goaltender at 1:56 to give the Eagles a 3–1 lead heading into the third.
Knowing no lead was safe against Metcalf, the Eagles came out flying in the final period, scoring twice before the midway point. Sachs netted his second of the game at 7:22, quickly followed by Purdie at 6:50, also his second of the game. Eganville held off the Jets for the remainder of the game to secure a 5–1 championship victory.
The win continues a remarkable run for the Eagles at the Leeds Chargers Tournament. The team has now attended the event three times—in 2019, 2025, and 2026—and has captured the championship on all three occasions.
